Shopping

If you want to do some bargain hunting during your Caribbean vacation, Anguilla is not the best place to do it.  Here, shops stock luxury items at prices higher than you might normally pay back home.

If it is a deal you are after, try taking the ferry over to nearby Marigot, St. Martin, where you will be able to find great deals on luxury goods at duty free prices.  This is often how even locals do their personal shopping.

The Goods

...some good deals to be found...

If you insist on shopping in Anguilla, you'd do well to hunt for locally made handicrafts, and other items produced on the island.  Luxury items such as name brand clothing and accessories, can be found in Anguilla, but it is often a challenge to locate even the most basic necessities at a reasonable value.

Where to Shop

The Anguilla Arts and Crafts Center in the Valley is where you can find a wide variety of island made crafts.  Ceramics, cloth dolls, embroidery, paintings, and more.  Another good place to look for these items is Cheddie's Carving Studio, Devonish Art Gallery, and Savannah Gallery.

High end products, on the other hand, are often found at boutiques located on resort properties

Duties, Taxes, and Tips

The official currency in Anguilla is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, though the United States Dollar (USD) is widely accepted.  Cash is the preferred method of payment, so make sure you have some on you at all times.

While shopping is not considered to be one of Anguilla's best features, there are some good deals to be found if you look hard.  Keep your eyes open, and cash in your pocket, in case you stumble upon a product you just can't pass up.
