Although the traffic moves relatively slowly on Anguilla, the island is only 16 miles long, so getting from place to place will never take very long. Travelers who want the freedom and mobility to explore the island's 33 beaches at their own pace should consider a rental car.
Visitors who wish to drive on Anguilla must have a valid driver's license from their home country. Many rental firms require drivers to be at least 25 years of age. In addition, drivers must obtain a $20(USD) local driver's permit, issued by most of the island's car rental firms. Jeeps, cars, and vans are all available, with rates ranging from $45(USD) to $70(USD) a day. Travelers must also purchase collision damage insurance, which ranges from $5(USD) to $15(USD) a day. Most firms allow for unlimited mileage, provide free pick up and delivery, and accept major credit cards.
Driving is done on the left hand side of the road in Anguilla. Drivers who are not accustomed to this traffic pattern should exercise additional caution when taking to the road. The speed limit throughout the island is 30 mph, except in towns and school zones where it is no more than 20 mph. Paved roads on the island can be in poor condition, with ruts and dips in the narrow lanes. Pay special attention to speed bumps and traffic roundabouts, and beware of goats, children, and pedestrians on the road, especially in the evenings. Always use caution and attentive driving skills when driving in a foreign country.
Most rental car services will not provide booster seats or car seats, so remember, if you are traveling with a young child you should bring a safety restraint system from home.
Several international car rental agencies, including Avis and Thrifty, are present on the island. Travelers can also choose from a number of local firms. Gas stations are located in Blowing Point Harbour, West End, The Valley, Sandy Hill, George Hill, and Island Harbour.
